Cinemascope on oil paintings by Alessandro Riva (from Arte Mondadori, 2002)
Born in Tuscany, Max Mazzoli developed his skills in the Seventies artistic and literary world of Livorno. As he says, “My uncle was an artist and my father was deeply involved with local intellectuals and artists”. Now he lives in Sassari, on the beautiful island of Sardinia where he has developed his unique style based on his cinematography studies. “I am interested”, he says, “in the primitive images of the old TV sets. Images that are fuzzy, crackled, and unrefined but somehow more fascinating and poetic, more like painting”.
Mazzoli has painted all his life: “I’ve studied under Mario Nigro”, says the artist, “when I was a young boy, but my artistic formation in Livorno was stuck to the same local tradition, so-called post macchiaiola“. The evolution came in the Seventies with the discovery of Hyperrealism. In those years, the artworks of famous American and European realists were exhibited everywhere, even in Italy, and they enlightened loads of young people. “I started to look at reality differently”, says the artist. “After that, I started to use TV as a window. Inside of it, a wealth of ideas and images that I stop and pick from collecting faces, moods and situations”. The artist transfers the subject on wood, “to create”, he explains, “a contrast between the modern technological element and the oldest technique known to mankind.
